Looking back, I have to admit that my early years as a leader were…unscripted. I thought and read and dialogued about leadership, but I overlooked a vital aspect of being a leader.
I failed to consider how I was supposed to bring my leadership knowledge into the world for those I led.
In other words, what behaviors must I display…what words must I craft…to put into practice the leadership principles I had internalized?
The key to doing so...is communication.

Welcome to the Speaking to Lead Masterclass!
I am a husband, father, and author with 23 years of speaking and leading experience as an Army officer.
In 2014, I created The Military Leader blog to share my thoughts on leadership. Amazingly, the platform continued to grow, now with millions of pageviews, over 9,000 email subscribers, 175,000 podcast downloads, and thousands of books sold.
Fun fact...my most nervous speaking moment came in the White House in 2016, when I was honored to narrate The National Medals of Science and Technology Awards. I rehearsed every line 25 times to avoid stumbling over the complex names and award citations. Thankfully, I got through it! And it taught me a key lesson about rehearsals that I will share with you.
I'll share another experience with you...
This year, I was honored that Military Mentors invited me to give the keynote address at their annual leader development experience. Honestly, I was intimidated by the phenomenal leaders and influencers in the room and was feeling the pressure to deliver.
I was tempted to script out my remarks like I had done in the past. However, after reflecting on what the audience would appreciate, I opted for simple photos and storytelling to deliver my points.
Thankfully, I was able to make a big impact and got some flattering feedback afterwards...
